GovSpend Slack App

This article reviews our newly introduced how to connect to and start using our GovSpend Slack App!

AI-powered procurement search, right in Slack

Ask the GovSpend bot procurement questions — vendor lookups, contract history, spend analysis, bid activity — and get AI-generated answers without leaving Slack.

Add to Slack

@GovSpend what were the top IT vendors for Fulton County last year?

Getting Started - Admin

Step 1: Install the app to your workspace

A GovSpend org admin completes this step once. All team members then connect their own accounts individually.

  • Open the install link: Click the Add to Slack button below.  You'll be redirected to Slack's authorization screen - no visit to the Slack App Directory required.

    Add to Slack
    • Note: You must be a Slack workspace admin, or have permissions to install apps, to complete this step.

  • Authorize the app: Review the permissions Slack displays — the bot requests access to read DMs and channel messages where it's @-mentioned, and to post replies. Click Allow to continue.
  • Log in and confirm: After approving permissions, you'll land on the GovSpend website. Log in with your GovSpend account if prompted. Once complete, you'll see a confirmation page and the bot will become active in your workspace.

Per-User Setup

Step 2: Connect your GovSpend account

Each team member links their own account once. The bot guides you through it automatically.

  • Message the bot: Open a DM with @GovSpend in Slack, or @-mention it in any channel where it has been added.
  • Click "Connect to GovSpend": The bot replies with a Connect to GovSpend button. Click it — you'll be taken to the GovSpend website to log in and authorize the connection.
  • Welcome DM confirms you're linked: After logging in, your Slack account is linked. The bot sends a welcome DM to confirm. Future messages go straight to the AI — no extra steps needed.

How to Use It

Step 3: Start Asking Questions

Once linked, ask procurement questions in two ways. The bot replies in-thread with AI-generated answers drawn from GovSpend data.

  • Direct Message: Open a DM with @GovSpend and type your question. Replies stay in the same thread.
  • Channel mention: In any channel where the bot is active, type @GovSpend followed by your question.

Common Questions

  • Can multiple people from my organization use the app?

    • Yes. Once an admin installs the app, anyone in the Slack workspace can link their own GovSpend account and use the bot independently.
  • What can I ask the bot?

    • Anything GovSpend AI Search supports — vendor lookups, contract history, agency spend analysis, bid activity, and more. Examples: "What vendors have IT contracts over $1M in Texas?" or "Show me recent bids from Fulton County."
  • The bot sent me a "Connect to GovSpend" button. What do I do?

    • Click the button and complete the account linking flow on the GovSpend website. After that, your future messages go straight to the AI — no button needed again.
  • I don't see a "Connect" button. What's wrong?

    • Make sure you messaged the bot directly via DM or @-mention. If the issue persists, ask your GovSpend admin to confirm the app is installed for your workspace.
  • The bot isn't responding to my questions.

    • Verify that your GovSpend account includes AI Search access. If the issue persists, contact GovSpend support.
  • How do I remove the app from our Slack workspace?

    • Go to Slack → Settings → Manage Apps, find GovSpend AI Search, and click Remove App. This removes the bot from all channels and DMs for everyone in the workspace.
